I decided to have the explanations for these two pieces combined into one post. Sorry if that’s annoying but I think people care most about the single images with no descriptions anyway so I’m doing it this way. The two pieces in question are both commissions - one of Magik and the other of Terry Downe, from the alternative comic Love and Rockets. Both of these commissions are actually from requests dating back to APE 2012. Yes. It’s been a whole year. Mainly because I’m a horrible bitch, but also because of work and other obligations. I’m so sorry to the requesters but they have been completely awesome and understanding and patient with me. Tried to put some extra TLC into the Magik one as it’s a placeholder for two pieces. Terry was requested by Chris Diaz and you should check out his tumblr. He posts great entries on little known comics, events, and artists he enjoys and he deserves all your attention.
The Magik is a redesign and I wanted to pull together elements from her Earth 616 look and her original outfit. Feels almost like an alternate reality orig Illyana. I think I’m most happy with the stylization of the figure. I’ve been struggling a lot lately because I feel I used to have a better method of stylizing the figure versus the me of today, constantly trying to be anatomically realistic. I feel like I’ve been losing some of my edge and “look” and I really want to try and get some of that back.
Terry is from a comic that, originally, was entirely in black and white and I wanted to do a subtle nod to her origins. I never read the series but she’s got a strong look and I wanted to really capture that 80s punk vibe. She was described to me as a feisty Latina lipstick lesbian and she’s definitely inspired by Joan Jett. Let me know what ya think!
