And now for a little background. My friend asked me if I wanted to partake in a themed group show at Art Attack SF, where he is one of the curators. It’s a comic themed show this Saturday in San Francisco, so if you’re in the area definitely pop on by. You guys may know, I love painting these three ladies and this time I wanted to take a different approach.
I wanted to envision them as otherworldly creatures (though Ms. Ivy already pretty much is) and take their looks and spirits even further. I wanted Poison to go full on Earth mother goddess with a bit of woodland elf influence. She has taken a few cues from Tim Sale’s Ivy. Harley was originally going to have a zombie kind of appearance but I decided to embrace more of the marionette/harlequin imagery that she conveys. She is literally a puppet, with a cracked porcelain face and Joker stitched grin. This version of Catwoman is very clearly Egyptian influenced and I could argue this could be a supernatural being or merely a costumed woman. It has the most practical look of the three. I love Egyptian statues of cats - clean, simple, striking and bold. There’s also a bit of Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl in the face. I originally was going to leave the face completely blank - I love the way it looks on Batgirl, so menacing and mysterious. I decided to give some decorative indicators for eyes and leave it at that and I’d love to flesh out this Catwoman some more. Let me know what you think and if you can make it out to the show you definitely should!
